Redwall: 20th Anniversary Edition
Written by Brian Jacques
The year 2007 marks Redwall's 20th Anniversary in the U.S. and, to celebrate, Philomel will be releasing a 20th Anniversary Edition of Redwall!
Troy Howell has illustrated an entirely new cover for the release-- his third cover for Redwall alone-- that looks to be more in keeping with the style of recent books. On it we find Matthias in the same pose he's been in on all of Howell's Redwall covers, only this time seen from a new perspective.
The cover appears to be a standard dust jacket affair, which means Redwall still won't receive the leatherette treatment Mossflower did.
As far as new content is concerned, Troy Howell has stated that he was not commissioned for any new artwork beyond the cover. Furthermore, in a forthcoming interview with The Long Patrol, current illustrator David Elliot (who handled art for the Mossflower Collector's Edition) reveals that he wasn't commissioned for any new artwork, either.
Then there's the matter of the following product description in various online catalogues:
The book that kicked off the phenomenon is now reissued with brandnew jacket art in honor of its 20th anniversary. Readers will delight anew in the thrilling adventures of young Matthias as he discovers the hero within. Brian Jacques classic tale of peaceful creatures forced to band together in battle has never felt more timely or full of life.
Only new jacket art is mentioned-- nothing about new interior art.
So where does that leave the project? Well, the way things are looking, the new dust jacket (seen right) is the only "new" piece of artwork we'll get with the 20th Anniversary Edition. That still leaves the question of which set of artwork the rest of the book will have-- Gary Chalk's original illustrations? Troy Howell's color illustrations from the 10th Anniversary Edition? A combination of the two? Or how about Fangorn's color illustrations from the U.K. Illustrated Collector's Edition? At this point, any are possible (although, personally, I find the Howell illustrations from the 10th most likely). We'll keep you posted.
Amazon.com has updated its cover of the Redwall: 20th Anniversary Edition to include a silver sticker that reads "20th Anniversary Edition!". The rest of the cover remains unchanged, save the addition of "A Tale from Redwall" over Brian's name. (See right.)
An unknown product entitled "Redwall 20th Anniversary Gift Package" has been showing up on Amazon's listings for the past month or so, as visitors of The Long Patrol Forums know, although specifics were lacking. Now, Amazon has posted the cover art (seen right) and we have enough information to theorize as to its contents. First, in addition to the Gift Package, individual items known as "Gift Package Book 1" and "Gift Package Book 2" and "Gift Package Book 3" have also turned up. At $4.00 apiece, these are too cheap and have too short a page count to be actual Redwall novels. Instead, they appear to be paperback releases of Redwall's three sub-parts-- The Wall, The Quest, and The Warrior. (Please note that remains unconfirmed at this point-- although it's very likely.) The Gift Package proper appears to be all three books in a slipcover box that bears the new 20th Anniversary Edition's cover artwork. It will be released by the Firebird young readers imprint.
Various online catalogues have posted the covers for Redwall Gift Package Book 1, Redwall Gift Package Book 2 and Redwall Gift Package Book 3.
While still vague in their titling, the covers seem to support our previous analysis that the books will be paperback releases of Redwall's three sub-parts-- The Wall, The Quest, and The Warrior. While only titled "Book One", "Book Two", and "Book Three", all three boast artwork from Troy Howell's original 1987 cover for Redwall, seemingly nixing the idea that these are separate Redwall tales. Furthermore, given the low page counts (which roughly correlate to the length of Redwall's three parts) and the low price point ($4.00), signs point to Firebird turning Redwall into its very own trilogy for the 20th Anniversary.
Redwall: 20th Anniversary Edition and Redwall: 20th Anniversary Gift Package both hit US shelves on October 4th, 2007. There's been no word on a UK release, especially seeing as their 20th anniversary was last year.
