Greatest Merseysider Named

Brian JacquesThe winner of The Liverpool Echo’s “Spirit of Liverpool” campaign– past coverage of which can be found here and here– has been revealed. Unfortunately, Brian Jacques didn’t muster enough votes to take the top spot. Surprisingly (although possibly only to a non-Liverpudlian), neither did the Beatles!

The Everton legend, soccer player Dixie Dean– who scored sixty goals in one season (a record yet to be surpassed)– was named Greatest Merseysider of All Time in celebration of Liverpool’s 800th Anniversary. The full story can be read at The Liverpool Echo.

A special gala event will be held at the World Museum Liverpool tomorrow, where a portrait of Dixie Dean, as well as ones for the other nine category finalists (including Brian Jacques), will be unveiled.
