I read the Redwall Books aloud, changing my voice to mimic each character’s unique accent (the mole-speak was the hardest)-we got so attached to the characters, especially the badgers, that when the first badger died in the book I had to stop, and we all sat and cried. From then on I had to read ahead, so I could prepare them (and myself) in advance for disasters like that. The only other one that caught us off guard was the death of Mother Mellus-that was a shock!

The kids liked my ‘Badger Voice” so much that they began calling me Badger-Mum instead of Mom, and that eventually shortened to just “Badger” or “Badge” (or Flame-Badger, when I got mad). To this day it is my well-used nickname, and although my ‘kids’ are 21 and 27, they still call me Badger, as do their friends and even my husband. I love it! I will mourn Brian Jacques and honor him by collecting all the Redwall Books, and still read them aloud when we all get together.

I only ever read the first book, Redwall. It was pretty good. When I took a look at the rest of the books, it semeed that the plot was essentially the same for all of them so I never read any further.

I only just learned of Brian Jacques death two nights ago. I read the first book, Redwall, last year and I had never enjoyed reading a book more than I enjoyed reading that for the first time. I am currently reading Mariel of Redwall and one day I shall read the Rogue Crew, but not before all the others. There are many years of Redwall yet to come for me.

I have tears in my eyes reading this. I read EVERY single one of these Redwall stories outloud to my son for the last 5 years, and to have gotten the news of Brians’ death when looking for news on the release of Rogues Crew was traumatic…I just want to say THANK YOU to y’all for posting this Rogues Crew preview..it will indeed be bittersweet, and meant to be savored–EULALIA!!!!!! Long Live the Bard of Redwall!!

‘Rogue Crew’ sounds wonderful – thanks for the preview! I look forward to reading it, but once it’s out, it really will be the end of an era. A very bittersweet time indeed.
